Precarity disproportionately affects women artists, particularly Black women, limiting their access to opportunities, funding, and networks that shape a career.\n\nThis financial instability not only slows their progress, but it also influences their artistic output, sometimes forcing them to adapt their practice to material realities or to sacrifice creative ambitions for economic viability.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\">As a woman, a Black woman, and a painter, I face these challenges directly, as do many other artists. Economic fragility in the art world is not new, but it hits women even harder, especially those from racial minorities. In England, it wasn\u2019t until 2017 that a Black woman painter, Lubaina Hamid, was awarded the Turner Prize\u2026\n\nThis economic vulnerability is often linked to multiple factors, from wage inequalities to structural discrimination, and it has profound consequences on the creative process. Understanding how economic precarity shapes women\u2019s art is crucial, as is reflecting on strategies to combat these discriminations.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-395cf85f e-flex e-con-boxed wpr-particle-no wpr-jarallax-no wpr-parallax-no wpr-sticky-section-no e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"395cf85f\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5fbf79aa elementor-widget__width-inherit elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"5fbf79aa\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Economic Dependence: A Structural Obstacle for Women Artists<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5807d701 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5807d701\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"translation-block\">The inequalities faced by women artists go beyond gender. They often intersect with other forms of discrimination, such as racism or social class. This is what American legal scholar Kimberl\u00e9 Crenshaw conceptualized as intersectionality: an approach that analyzes how multiple oppressions overlap and reinforce each other.\n\nBelgian curator and committed gallery owner Wetsi Mpoma testifies:\n<b>\"When you\u2019re just trying to figure out how you\u2019ll eat until the end of the month, you\u2019re not creating. You have other things to deal with. You must respond to the economic urgency.\"<\/b>\n\nFor Black artists, the need to juggle overwhelming financial pressures often takes precedence over creative freedom. Wetsi notes that this instability forces artists to produce more commercial works, sometimes far from their deepest aspirations:\n<b>\"There are artists who dream at night of their engaged paintings, but produce clich\u00e9d works just to please their collectors.\"<\/b>\n\nThis dilemma between authentic expression and economic necessity is a reality for many artists, who find themselves compelled to conform their work to market expectations. It\u2019s not only about economic survival\u2014it is a direct result of systemic inequalities in the artistic ecosystem.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\">In Europe, women face additional obstacles in accessing exhibitions, funding, and networks necessary to make their work known. Hiembi, a young Afro-feminist painter in Paris, shares that she currently babysits a child in addition to offering painting workshops :\n<b>\"I am precarious, but I\u2019m lucky to still live with my mother, which saves me rent. They give artists the opportunity to work for a year without worrying about material conditions, because that\u2019s what fosters creativity\" <\/b>explains Wetsi Mpoma.\n\nWithout such financial support, many artists struggle to free up the time necessary to fully dedicate themselves to their art. On platforms like Instagram, some artists adopt postures or aesthetics that sexualize their image\u2014not by artistic choice, but by economic necessity.\n\nWetsi Mpoma, who observes this trend, explains:\n<b>\"On Instagram, I see young artists sexualizing themselves to gain visibility and sell. They use their bodies as a marketing tool, not by artistic choice, but out of necessity.\"<\/b>\n\nThis phenomenon reveals the omnipresent male gaze in the art industry, where women often must conform to aesthetic expectations related to the sexualization of their bodies to be seen and recognized.<\/p><p>Hiembi also observes, without judgment, that some artists are forced to adapt to the prevailing patriarchy. Hiembi shares collaborations with other women, often in contexts where they gave her a chance.\n\nWomen in strategic positions in the cultural sector actively try to reduce gender inequalities and promote women artists by offering them deserved opportunities.<\/p><p>Furthermore, faced with precarity, Hiembi and others consider diversifying to generate additional income, developing workshops and targeting wealthier clients, such as companies. En tant que femme, femme noire et artiste peintre, je suis directement confront\u00e9e \u00e0 ces d\u00e9fis, tout comme de nombreuses autres artistes. La fragilit\u00e9 \u00e9conomique dans le milieu artistique n\u2019est pas une nouveaut\u00e9, mais elle frappe encore plus durement les femmes, en particulier celles issues des minorit\u00e9s raciales. De plus, la France reste en retard par rapport \u00e0 des pays voisins comme le Royaume-Uni, qui ont fourni des efforts pour r\u00e9duire ces in\u00e9galit\u00e9s, notamment en organisant plusieurs r\u00e9trospectives d&rsquo;artistes noires britanniques, comme celles pr\u00e9sent\u00e9es \u00e0 Tate Britain. Une ins\u00e9curit\u00e9 financi\u00e8re qui emp\u00eache l\u2019investissement dans la cr\u00e9ation L\u2019impact de cette pr\u00e9carit\u00e9 financi\u00e8re est profond. Elle contraint de nombreuses artistes \u00e0 cumuler plusieurs petits boulots pour subvenir \u00e0 leurs besoins, au d\u00e9triment de leur pratique artistique. Hiembi, une jeune artiste peintre afrof\u00e9ministe parisienne, confie qu\u2019elle garde actuellement un enfant en tant que babysitter en plus de proposer des ateliers de peinture. \u00ab Je suis pr\u00e9caire, mais j\u2019ai de la chance de toujours habiter avec ma m\u00e8re, cela me fait \u00e9conomiser un loyer. Sinon, cela serait tr\u00e8s difficile \u00bb, explique-t-elle. Cette double vie, entre travail salari\u00e9 et pratique artistique, est une r\u00e9alit\u00e9 partag\u00e9e par de nombreuses femmes dans le secteur artistique, qui se voient contraintes de sacrifier leur temps cr\u00e9atif pour assurer leur subsistance. Historiquement, les artistes europ\u00e9ens ont pu compter sur des riches nobles et bourgeois, qui finan\u00e7aient leur travail, leur permettant ainsi de se consacrer enti\u00e8rement \u00e0 la cr\u00e9ation, \u00ab les m\u00e9c\u00e8nes, qu&rsquo;est-ce qu&rsquo;ils font ? Ils offrent aux artistes la possibilit\u00e9 de travailler, pendant un an, sans se poser de questions par rapport aux conditions mat\u00e9rielles, parce que c&rsquo;est \u00e7a qui favorise la cr\u00e9ativit\u00e9 \u00bb explique Wetsi Mpoma. Faute de tels soutiens financiers, de nombreuses artistes peinent \u00e0 d\u00e9gager le temps n\u00e9cessaire pour se consacrer pleinement \u00e0 leur art.
